I started training Wadoryu Karate in 1987 at the age of eleven. Having never been very athletic, I quickly found it was a great form of physical activity for me. It does not require strength, fitness, or flexibility to start practicing Karate. These come naturally over time as you train and advance your skills.
I also like that Karate is practiced in a group, where you can learn from each other, yet everyone can develop at their own pace. Around nine years later I was introduced to Jujutsu, and with its techniques I felt complemented Karate very nicely. Eventually, I switched from Karate to Jujutsu, practicing it for five years.
Fast forward to 2021 when, after a twenty-year break, I came across Espoo Wadokai, sparking my curiosity: could I still do this? As it turns out, it is indeed never too late to start (again). After one year of refreshing my memory and updating my techniques, I now am an assistant coach to Sensei Jarno Evakoski at the Art Zenter Academy dojo, and in 2024 I got, after hard work, the Black Belt in Karate Wadokai. The journey just started!
Welcome to join us at Karate Espoo Wadokai!
